AirPlay 2 is Apple’s response to Amazon Alexa and Google, who have made tremendous inroads with music streaming platforms like Sonos, Heos, and MusicCast. With AirPlay 2, you’ll be able to control all AirPlay 2-enabled speakers from a single app and use Siri voice commands to play songs in particular rooms. Airplay 2 is a significant upgrade to Apple’s original (and at the time pioneering) Airplay technology and the first major upgrade in years.
AirPlay 2 supports whole home, multi-room streaming; HomeKit and Siri integration; multi-device control; improved buffering; and compatibility HomePod. AirPlay 2 controls are available across iOS devices within any app and in Control Center. From there users have instant access to content playing in every room and on every speaker.
Apple Music subscribers can use Siri to play different songs in different rooms or the same song on every speaker. AirPlay 2 support will make these Denon, Marantz, and Heos products compatible with products from Bang & Olufsen, Bluesound, Bose, Bowers & Wilkins, Libratone, Marshall, Naim, Pioneer, and (yes) Sonos.
