One of my best friends recently visited me and during his visit, I had him try out 10 or so on-ear and over-the-ear headphones from my extensive collection. He made it a point to comment that some headphones were extremely uncomfortable for him to wear while others made his eyes wide with their comfort.
He told me that he’s always had trouble with headphones and has settled on earbuds. He said that the size of his head and the shape of his ears often made it a problem to find comfortable headphones.
That prompted the two of us to do a bit of an experiment and see which headphones had that goldilocks style “just right” fit. I thought it would be an interesting opportunity to post some of the best fitting headphones from my collection so here we go:
B&W P7
Bowers & Wilkins P7 over the ear headphones envelop you in luxury. There is no other way to say it. The infinitely adjustable headband, generously padded leather ear cups, and near perfect balance of sitting securely on your head without over-pressing it is a nod to their industrial design. Their fit and feel is simply top-notch. These headphones are light and make you forget that you’re wearing them. B&W just announced a wireless P7 version too.
V-Moda Crossfade Wireless
I just love these headphones. These Italian-designed headphones not only look slick but they feel great too. They have the look and feel of a good studio headphone with killer audiophile sound. If you haven’t found a headphone that fits and feels just right the Crossfade wireless is your ticket.
Oppo PM-1/PM-2
These nearly identical twin headphones from Oppo have spacious ear cups. The PM-1 comes with lambskin leather ear cups and we recommend upgrading its younger twin, PM-2 to the same for a perfect feel and fit.
Meze 99 Classics
These Romanian designed headphones feature a self-tensioning headband for a perfect fit each time. The ear cups are comfortable and spacious and the flexible, metal headband Will fit even those who have larger heads.
While there are other great fitting headphones these are the four that topped our list from our reference collection. Tell us which audiophile-quality headphones you think have the best fit and feel.
Do you have any headphones that you feel have a great fit? Let us know.
Sennheiser 598’s for my money.
