Can listening to music ease pain?

Audiophiles will be among the first to tell you that music is a soothing and even transcendent experience. It seems like science is trying to see if there is any further, medical merit to those core audiophile philosophies.  A recent study by Loyd’s Pharmacy Group indicated that 40% of people reported that music helped ease their pain.

Other study conclusions were based on responses from over 1,500 people living with persistent pain. Whether it was the music itself, a combination of other factors, or nothing at all will remain to be seen. Regardless, I think we can all–hopefully–recall those moments of utter bliss at some point when listening to music. Audiophiles have always seen music as an essential part of the essence of life. If music eases pain, then that’s just icing on the cake.
